This year you can make a resolution entirely unrelated to cutting down on excess naughty goodness or increasing your ‘glow factor’: eating nuts! Adding nuts to your daily diet for a year may help reduce your risk for heart disease. A study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine demonstrated a positive relationship between eating nuts and improved cholesterol and blood pressure. While individuals in the study did not sustain weight loss, there was a favorable reduction in belly fat corresponding to substantial metabolic benefits.
As with any study with too-good-to-be-true results, there is a caveat. The study was conducted on individuals heavily influenced with a diet rich in fruit, vegetables and fish. Therefore, adding nuts to a Western world diet, may not show the same effects UNLESS one is willing to cut down on processed foods (i.e. chips, cookies, Twinkies and cheese-its) and replace unhealthy snacks with protein rich nuts like hazelnuts, almonds or walnuts.
Pistachios are my fav…ok I know they are not on the list, but I mean the shear surprise of it all, will it be green or purple, big or small, fresh or roasted, salted or unsalted…the possibilities are endless. The show stopper is the one that has no opening, you put it between your teeth at an attempt to crack that bad boy open, bite down and gosh darn, it slips right out! Much like with that illusive pistachio, we need to take caution before diving face first in to research findings. So ask your doc before beginning a new diet plan.

I love nuts! Pistachios are second in book behind cashews. I think I will be conducting my own study on the effects of eating 5 pounds of cashews a day. I will be sure to report back with my own caveats.
Thanks for the post R! Informative and entertaining as usual.
Raw almonds are my favorite and walnuts come in my top ten too. You have to be careful with the processed nuts that load them up with fat and salt.
Good post R
I'm a big fan of nuts too! And I think pistachios are pretty darn good for you too. (Unless you break your jaw on the ones that won't open).
Raw almonds are my favourite. Yum yum. Except I like them so much that I can sit down with a can of them and just keep on munching until someone takes them away from me:)
I like peanuts, too, but usually only eat them when they're mixed in nuts and bolts (aka covered in oil and spices hehe).
I am all about the nuts! I love to snack on raw almonds through out the day....and yes I love pistachios!
Thanks for visiting & commenting!
Almonds & Pistachios seem to be a fav around here. My mom is a big fan of "eat everything, ANYBODY says is good for you" so we always have nuts laying around the house to snack on, plus the vitamin aisle at Walgreens lives at our house as well ;)
I love nuts, too - especially almonds! And yet, I've gotten away from eating them... So, this is a great reminder for me - get some nuts!
Pistachios - your very entertaining look at them has me wondering if I shouldn't give them a try to!!
