Today's society is plagued by what seems to be eternal black skies. Fear of lay-offs, high blood pressure, terrorism, heart disease, global warming, cancer and now pirates? But, in spite of dreary headlines being splattered across newspapers everywhere, our well being needn't suffer.Taking a positive outlook, some say, along with proper nutrition and exercise, can help us to balance out our lifestyle.
As it turns out, those who maintain an optimistic outlook on life tend to show less incidence of chronic illness, both physical and mental. It is likely that when these individuals are faced with the perils of adversity, are able to protect themselves from the negative affects of stress.
Studies show that this phenom is contagious. Individuals who were surrounded by friends who described themselves as 'happy' were more likely to experience the same glee in their own lives.
What's even better than that? Researchers have demonstrated that with a good teacher, you can learn to be optimistic and re-wire your thinking to improve your life!!
- PRACTICE REALISM
While being chipper can get old, FAST, and more important than that is that you are in touch with reality. Small things may seem like the end of the world, but taking a step back and considering alternate options can be the best way to keep your head up and stress at bay. - ALLOW YOURSELF TO GRIEVE
While it is easy to fall into a depressive state over a lost loved one, or job, it is important grieve with acceptance in mind. Thinking of the big picture in situations like this can help you to lay it to rest and look forward to your future. - BABY STEPS
As with any big change in life, it is important to take it slow and avoid immersing yourself in anything that will make you feel overwhelmed. Start with a positive thoughts journal so that you can transform your thought process and see if this spills into the rest of your life!
How about you guys? Where is the milk line in your glass? Have you seen a positive impact in your own life as a result?

Hi Rupal,
Yes! I love it - happiness!! While I'm not always happy, I do tend to be usually happy - and coming from a state a few years ago where that wasn't necessarily the case - I've really come to believe that seeing the positive is very affirming in my life, and I just feel better.
oh
I thought it was a question (not rhetorical) so I shouted MY MOM!!!
My glass? so overflowing I spend my days asking people if I can dump some into theirs...
seriously.
I'm a chipper-ish sort of person, most of the time. A friend of mine says it's very annoying. But she loves me anyway. :)
My attitude is summed up by the phrase I have used for years to describe myself: "relentlessly cheerful."
Yes, bad things happen, but so do good ones.

I need to practice this positive thinking more. We all need a reminder. Great post!
I'm a more "The volume of liquid is half the amount of the capacity of the container in which it rests" kind of person :) I'm happy there's liquid, and more importantly that it's in a container (although no crying over spilt milk ;), but it is what it is.
Oh, I'm stupidhappy. My life is very good.
Lance-- Glad to hear you made the change and are seeing the benefits!!

In general, I have always been a happy and optimistic person. I lost that somewhere in life's hard turns. That happens a lot, so it's nothing unique to me.
Fighting to get that younger version of myself back was a bigger battle than taking off the weight. It was the outcome I wanted most at the end of the process. I succeeded.
Doubt still sometimes spoils my glass of milk, but I seem able to get the glass righted easier these days. Of course, the moment something momentous happens that will be out the window ...
Until then, I remain happy and optimistic ... even as the universe still takes its time in deciding the fate of my ... biggest dream, the thing I want most. It surprises me as to how fast I came back into balance. It's the state of being I prefer though.
My word verification is defrac ... they must watch Battle Star Galactica.
It has been tough to keep upbeat lately, but I continue with my volunteering, exercising and training. I am quite fortunate to have a large support group of friends and family, so that helps me from becoming too down and dismal.
It will get better!
Positive thinking has changed my life. I know, corny times a million! But, it's true! When I always try to see the positive side of things, I'm always happier and more fulfilled. When I think about the worst happening, it inevitably does. I believe there's a lot more to this whole positive thinking thing than we realize and it can absolutely make a difference in anyone's life!
I'm generally fairly cheerful (although I do tend to suffer from SADD in the winter - which would be a really good excuse for a winter holiday, right?!)
I believe in the power of positive thinking, too, but need to beat that into my husband's mind. (oops, did that sound like I want to beat my husband? Not what I meant. At least, I don't think that's what I meant...:))
